SQUIRRELS

Grey Squirrels were imported in to this country from North America in the late 18th century and early 19th century and are found all over England and Wales.Their diet consists of nuts, birds eggs, young birds found in nests, fruit and buds on trees  - and of course in urban areas the food put out for birds and sometimes squirrels.
Squirrels breed twice a year and the first litters are born February / March and the second litter in June / July.  Favourite nesting sites are in nests built in trees (dreys) or in roof spaces of dwelling houses.
Damage done to roof spaces is as follows :
Roof timbers and joists gnawed.
Roof insulation torn up to make a nest.
Electrical wiring chewed to the extent of it becoming a fire risk.
Trying to drink from the cold water storage tank, falling in and drowning thus contaminating the water.
